“At the heart of the directors’ aim, I imagine, was to tackle this uniquely poignant end to a Shakespeare comedy[...] in this they succeeded, with a bittersweet ending of satisfying tragicomic unity.”

Staged in an outdoor theatre, this production of Love’s Labour’s Lost, co-directed with Max Mason, aimed to provide a bittersweet homage to the fleeting nature of a summer romance.

Inspired by films such as Call Me By Your Name and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, this production embraced the music and visuals of films from/set in 1960s-80s Europe. The sound design included music by Piero Piccioni, Françoise Hardy, and Franck Pourcel, while the costume design embraced soft pastels and extensive use of colour symbolism. This symbolism, in which each romantic pairing was assigned a specific colour, not only elevated the design of the show to a more exaggerated or whimsical level, but also aided in making the play and its many romances easier to follow for newcomers to the work.
